5 Things to Do When You Need Emergency Roof Repair

| By Trust Roofing & Restoration

A roof emergency does not wait for business hours. Whether a tree limb punches through your decking at 2 AM or a storm rips off a section of shingles during dinner, how you respond in the first hours determines how much damage your home sustains. Here are five steps to take when you need emergency roof repair.

1. Protect Your Family and Move Valuables

Before you think about the roof, think about the people under it.

  • Evacuate any rooms with active water infiltration or visible structural damage
  • Turn off electricity to affected areas if water is near outlets or fixtures
  • Move furniture, electronics, and valuables away from leak zones
  • Place buckets or containers under active drips to contain water

If there is any sign of structural collapse — sagging ceilings, cracking sounds, or a large hole in the roof — leave the home immediately and call 911.

2. Document the Damage Before Touching Anything

Your insurance claim depends on documentation. Before you start any cleanup or temporary repair:

  • Photograph everything — the exterior damage, interior leaks, damaged belongings, and the source of the breach
  • Take video showing the scope of the problem
  • Note the date, time, and weather conditions that caused the damage
  • Do not throw anything away — damaged materials serve as evidence for your adjuster

This documentation is the foundation of a successful insurance claim. Without it, you risk a reduced settlement or outright denial.

3. Apply Temporary Protection

If you can safely access the damaged area, temporary measures prevent secondary water damage while you wait for professional repair.

Safe Temporary Fixes

  • Tarp the exterior — Secure a heavy-duty tarp over the damaged area using 2x4 boards or sandbags. Extend the tarp at least 4 feet past the damage in every direction
  • Seal small gaps — Roofing cement or waterproof tape can temporarily seal small punctures or lifted flashing
  • Manage interior water — Use towels, buckets, and a wet/dry vacuum to control water on floors and in the attic

What NOT to Do

  • Do not climb onto a wet or damaged roof during active rain or wind
  • Do not attempt to nail shingles in place — improper fastening can void your warranty
  • Do not use open flames (torches) for any temporary repair
  • Do not attempt structural repairs yourself

If conditions are too dangerous for temporary protection, focus on interior containment and call a professional immediately.

4. Call a Local Roofing Contractor — Not a Storm Chaser

In an emergency, you need a contractor who can respond fast and do the job right. This is not the time to choose based on who shows up at your door first.

What to Look for in an Emergency

  • 24/7 availability — A real emergency service, not just a voicemail
  • Local presence — A contractor who is already in the Wilmington, NC area, not driving in from hours away
  • Insurance and licensing — Even in an emergency, verify these fundamentals
  • Manufacturer certification — A GAF Certified Contractor follows proper procedures even under emergency conditions
  • Experience with storm damageStorm damage restoration requires specialized knowledge

Storm Chasers to Avoid

After major storms, out-of-area contractors flood into coastal NC. They knock on doors, offer fast repairs, and pressure homeowners into signing contracts. These contractors often:

  • Use substandard materials for “quick fixes” that fail within months
  • Overcharge for emergency work
  • Disappear before warranty issues arise
  • Do not carry adequate insurance

5. File Your Insurance Claim Promptly

Once the immediate crisis is controlled, contact your insurance company.

Your Claim Checklist

  • Policy number and coverage details
  • Date and cause of the damage (wind, fallen tree, hail, etc.)
  • Photos and video documentation from Step 2
  • Receipts for emergency supplies (tarps, buckets, cleanup materials)
  • Contact information for your roofing contractor

Working With Your Adjuster

Your roofing contractor should be involved in the adjuster’s inspection. An experienced contractor identifies damage that adjusters sometimes overlook, including:

  • Wind-lifted shingles that are still in place but compromised
  • Hail bruising that weakens shingles without visible breakage
  • Compromised flashing and sealant failures
  • Decking damage hidden beneath intact shingle layers

Having your contractor present ensures the claim scope accurately reflects the full extent of damage.
